She said, “Mandela Day is the opportunity to give back to the people and to donate your time to help someone. I admire Madiba’s courage and leadership. He was a charismatic leader and he wanted all people to grow, and that’s what we are doing for Mandela Day.

“We called the centre and asked them what they needed. They told us that they are trying to be self-sustainable by expanding their vegetable garden. We decided that we can help plant more vegetables and clean their gardens for them. We are also cleaning and tidying up around the yard,” Rakgadi said.

Although the members of the Foundation brought all of the supplies, the people from the centre didn’t let them do all the work.

Young and old, men and women and even a few people with disabilities worked hard in the garden.

“Isaac Phaked, the centre coordinator, said that they have 81 people on site, most of them are disabled. We have 22 volunteers today and everybody is giving a helping hand where they can,” Rakgadi said.

They also left some food that the people from the centre can prepare for themselves in the following week.

“What we liked about this centre is that although many of the people here are disabled, they don’t just sit around and wait for charity. They work in their own garden and they do their best to maintain it,” Rakgadi said.
