UPDATE: All calm in town after #TotalShutDown threat

Situation calm in Randfontein after threat to bring town to a standstill. There were, however, some sporadic tyre-burning incidents last night.

Randfontein Police confirmed that although there were some sporadic tyre- burning incidents in the Mohlakeng area on the night of Tuesday, 17 July, there is no major unrest nor is the town at a standstill as threatened would be the case.

In fact, the residents are currently clearing the streets of the rubble left after the minor unrest on Tuesday night.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, the Randfontein Police spokesperson, “Brigadier Jacob Manamela, the Randfontein Police station commander wishes to thank the residents of Mohlakeng as well as all the councillors who partook in the community meeting on Tuesday evening in which they decided the so-called total shutdown was not going to happen.”

She added, “We have been monitoring the situation since Tuesday night when there were a few incidents of tyre-burning, but that stopped at about 8.30pm. This morning, Wednesday, 18 July, everything was back to normal and there were no problems in the area.”

Ernst emphasised that residents must please confirm the details before they send out panic SMSes and WhatsApp messages to everyone.

“The police station was inundated with calls from residents and business owners in the area worried about their businesses and kids going to school. I think the residents must take responsibility and think before they share things that have not been confirmed.”
