#MunicipalMonday: Thousands of litres of water wasted in Homelake, Greenhills

VIDEO: For this week's #MunicipalMonday, the Herald spoke to a councillor about the thousands of litres of water being wasted in two areas of Randfontein.

Thousands of litres of water are being wasted as manholes and pipes are spouting pure clean water in various spots in Homelake and Greenhills.

The Herald went into the streets with DA councillor, Ellik de Lange, to look at some of the leaks.

De Lange said repairs to the leaking water pipe in Homelake, on the corner of Freda Avenue and Norman Road, are long overdue, as the matter has been reported to the municipality repeatedly during the seven past months. He said this is a total waste of money and has to be fixed urgently.

“I have reported [this problem] since last year on a regular basis,” De Lange added.

He said his latest message was sent on 12 July, but there has been no communication from the municipality whatsoever.

De Lange said in some instances the leaking becomes far worse, because people steal water meters and manhole covers.

He said a similar problem can also be seen in Greenhills on Raven Road and Kanfer Street, and possibly many spots in other suburbs.

De Lange said in many instances, the constant flow of water causes potholes, leaving road users at greater risk than previously.

“This is very dangerous and we need help here urgently,” De Lange concluded.
