Forty arrested in Bekkersdal crime blitz

Bekkersdal Police made 40 arrests yesterday, among them illegal immigrants.

Forty people were arrested at the Homolisa informal settlement in Bekkersdal on Wednesday, 11 July for being in the country illegally and/ or for being involved in other crimes.

This followed a joint operation between 8am and 12 noon by the Bekkersdal Police, CPF patrollers and AfriForum.

The suspects arrested were aged between 18 and 53 years.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson explained, “The suspects were arrested following random stops and searches for crimes such as being in possession of gold-bearing material, hijacked vehicles and dagga, owning a liquor outlet illegally and/ or the lack of valid documentation.

“All those arrested are expected to appear in court soon,” she added.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander applauded members involved in the operation.

“This is a result that one should expect after a joint operation,” Swart said.
