21 Sibanye-Stillwater miners dead in 2018 – DA concerned

DA visited family members of the deceased miners who work at Sibanye-Stillwater in Westonaria on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, 3 July, representatives of the DA visited family members of the deceased miners who worked at Sibanye-Stillwater in Westonaria.

This follows yet another fatal mining accident at Sibanye-Stillwater operations last week. One person died at the Sibanye Stillwater Komanani mine on Monday, 25 June after being caught by a scraper. A media statement released by the company stated that the worker died after entering a scraper path. Sibanye said the reasons for the tragic incident are yet to be determined.

Solly Malatsi, the national spokesperson for the DA, and Rand West constituency head, Jacques Julius were part of the delegation. They were joined by Seth Sekhokho, local DA PR councillor.

The DA said it is committed to have Sibanye-Stillwater brief the Portfolio Committee on Mineral Resources.

“With 21 Sibanye-Stillwater miners having lost their lives in 2018, legitimate concerns have been raised over the standard of safety at Sibanye-Stillwater and other mining operations in South Africa.

“We engaged the families on their concerns and will investigate whether the families that have lost loved ones to one of these mining accidents have been effectively supported by the company,” the statement read.
