#ThrowbackThursday – January 1985

The Herald goes back, way back, to January 1985 for this week's #ThrowbackThursday.

It’s Throwback Thursday and the Herald went back in time, to January 1985, to see what was in the news.

Looking back, it was easy to see just how much the community and town has changed – some changes are good, some are bad …

The focus was on women in the 11 January 1985 issue of the Randfontein Herald but there was a lot of other interesting news as well.

– Doctors at the Robinson Hospital welcomed three New Year’s babies – two boys and a girl.

– South Africa’s first female plumber, Eugenia Stasowiak from Poland, pioneered her way into the plumbing industry.

– Joshua Doore advertised a nine-piece lounge suite for only R799.

– The Women’s page had great recipes for health drinks and Amarula cocktails.

– Recession hit Randfontein, but Toyota fought back with deals like R12 455 for a Cressida (only R399 a month on lease for 36 months).

– In the sport news, Mark Plaaitjies beat local athlete, Kenny Jacobs, in a Fanie van Zijl-Brooks race.

The second issue, dated 25 January 1998, addressed community issues.

– The Railway Preservation Centre at Millsite announced that they would open once a month for the public to come and enjoy the ‘Iron Ladies’.

– Three beautiful brides from Randfontein sent in their applications for the Bride Of The Year competition.

– Have you ever bought a bottle of tomato sauce for R1,39? Pick ‘n Pay had jaw-dropping prices and deals in 1985.
