Two arrested, illegal firearm confiscated

Local police arrested two men for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm as well as ammunition during the weekend.

The police arrested two men in a suspicious-looking vehicle in Westonaria on Saturday, 24 June.

According to Warrant Officer Raymond Sebonyane, Westonaria Police spokesperson, Sergeant Edward Molefe and Constable Nokuthula Letlatsa were conducting routine patrols around the town at 2am. The two officers allegedly spotted a suspicious-looking white Toyota Corolla on Botha Street.

“They stopped and searched the two occupants and the vehicle. They found one 9mm pistol, one magazine and four [rounds of] live ammunition,” Sebonyane said.

Both men, aged 38 and 40, were then arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm. They are being held at the Westonaria Police cells and are expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

“The Westonaria Police station commander, Colonel Selvan Moonsamy, commended the members for their vigilance and for a job well done by removing an unlawful firearm from the community,” Sebonyane said.
