Community joins hands for safety

Seventeen vests were also handed over to the CPF members.

All hands were on deck on Saturday 23 June, when residents of Vleikop, Rikasrus and Dennydale put up a sign for the Sector 5(d) CPF, to create more visibility and increase vigilance in the community. The board is at the intersection of Carletonville Road and First Avenue in Vleikop.

Gerrie Pretorius, the chairperson of the CPF, said even though crime in the area is relatively low, it is still vital for the community to be alert and have the information to act swiftly against crime.

READY TO BEAT CRIME: Louis Grobler, Patrol Coordinator; Douglas Ngwasha, sponsor of the boards, and the chairperson of the Sector 5(d) CPF, Gerrie Pretorius.

“Our aim in putting up this sign is to get members of the community to visit us. Our CPF has been going for about three to four years, but our crime rate is very low – just one or two incidents at any given time. At the moment we have about nine patrollers and work on a schedule.”

Pretorius said the board carries the Sector 5(d) CPF logo, and the contact details for the area. The sign is right next to the Vleikop Farmers’ Centre board, which was also put up on the same day.

Louis Grobler, a patrol coordinator said, “Together we can make a difference, and the more we stand together, the better for the whole community”.

Douglas Ngwasha, one of the sponsors of the board, who is also member of the community and a patroller, said a community only exists when its members feel safe.

“It is very important that we all feel safe in our community and that is the primary reason we sponsored the board”, Ngwasha said. He said the board will raise awareness of the CPF’s existence among community members.

Seventeen vests were also handed over to the CPF’s members. These will make them easy to identify.
