Roadshow for using waste

The project will be carried out nationally, in partnership with all the South African provinces.

The South African Waste Business Forum (SAWBF) has embarked on a roadshow in which solutions for waste management are being discussed.

Cooperatives, business owners and those who work at the landfills attended the workshop held at the Banquet Hall on Wednesday, 13 June.

Chief Executive Officer of SAWBF, Thoko Shumang, presented the solutions for many problems in the industry.

Teboho Motloung, spokesperson for the SAWBF, which is spearheading the roadshow, said, “We have realised that there are opportunities in waste, and many challenges for those who are dealing with it”.

He said in order for these problems to be resolved, all the stakeholders have to be united.

“We are trying to build a network that will help us inform people about the existence of this forum so that those who are in the industry can run their operations more successfully.”

Motloung said the forum started last year, and has so far engaged various municipalities across Gauteng.

“Since we realised that the municipalities have challenges, especially with the resources they need to give to the people who deal with waste, we have to decide who to give the apparatus to in order for it to be used effectively.

“Our way forward is to sit down with various municipalities and find out what plans they have for managing their waste.

“We will find out what equipment they have, to ensure that they deal with waste in the correct manner, and then assist them to give it to the people who are in the best position to use it most effectively,” he said.

He said various training programmes will be offered in order to achieve this goal. “We need to establish what training they have and what their weaknesses and strengths are. Once we have identified that, we will be in a position to determine the problems, which we expect will be different in each municipality,” Motloung added.
