UPDATE: West Rand hit by power outage

Latest on the power outage that hit the West Rand on Tuesday afternoon.

Various parts of the West Rand, specifically Randfontein and Krugersdorp was hit by a power outage on Tuesday (12 June).

The Herald could establish that a sub-station for Eskom, situated in rural Krugersdorp, caught fire.

Gerhadt Nieuwoudt , Krugersdorp Fire Chief said, “We responded to a fire emergency at the substation in Swaneville. We also called in the Randfontein Emergency Services because we did not have enough water, but we managed to extinguish the fire,” Nieuwoudt said. He confirmed there were no injuries.

Mogale City Local Municipality has released the following statement at about 4pm.

“We wish to inform residents that the source has been established at Eskom-Westgate Substation which is a feeder that supplies City of Johannesburg, Randfontein and Mogale City. It led to Vlei Power Station in Kagiso Extensions and Condale in Krugersdorp Industrial Park to catch fire because of unplanned disruption of the system. The fire has since been extinguished.

The teams have also managed to restore parts of Kagiso and will ensure that the entire city gets supply back soon. As indicated we apologise for the inconvenience caused to residents.”
