A case of business burglary and attempted murder is being investigated after a mall was targeted and security shot at yesterday.

Randfontein Police are investigating a case of business burglary and attempted murder following a shootout between suspects and security at a local mall during the morning of Wednesday, 6 June.

Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and said that at about 5.50am a 33-year-old security officer allegedly responded to an alarm in the mall. He was apparently confronted by a group of suspects who opened fire in his direction.

“He retaliated and the men ran towards two vehicles and fled the scene,” Ernst said.

Police confirmed that the security officer sustained no injuries during the gun battle, but it was established that the suspects burgled and took goods from a retail clothing shop in the mall.

Johan Krogh, General Manager of EPR West Rand added that two reaction officers were also involved in the incident.

“As EPR Security West Rand, we are very proud of Reaction Officers Johan Engelbrecht and Shaun McGee, who put their lives at risk,” Krogh said.

The Herald is awaiting comment from the mall.
