‘Illegal investment’ cloud over municipality

A memorandum was delivered and signed by the municipality regarding allegations of an illegal investment.

On Thursday morning, 7 June, the DA submitted a memorandum asking how the West Rand District Municipality will recover the R81 million that has allegedly been illegally invested in VBS Mutual Bank.

The memorandum was also signed by Mayor Boyce Baneli outside the premises of the municipality.

“The executives, including the officials involved in making the investment, must face disciplinary action. We expect a positive responsive on all that has been tabled as requested within 14 days,” said the DA Gauteng Shadow MEC for Finance, Adriana Randall.

After signing the memorandum, Maneli said: “On behalf of the municipality, I have received the memorandum. I do understand the implications of responding within 14 days. If I had an opportunity, I would answer now. You can get the feedback even tomorrow. We have nothing to hide.”

In response to the mayor’s comment, Jacques Julius said if the municipality had nothing to hide, people would have been told about the investment in the first place. Julius went on say that corruption in government must end immediately.

“We would like to thank the Gauteng DA caucus for elevating this issue so the people know what is happening in the West Rand District Municipality. We are tired of corruption.

“We are tired of the endemic corruption that is so deeply rooted within the government, especially where the ANC governs. It is only when we get inside that we see the corruption of all the politicians in this municipality. The officials are corrupt to the core! We have to tell our people out there, enough is enough!” he said.

Randall also said the investment in the VBS Bank is illegal as the bank is not registered.

“We will not see this money, if we are lucky, we might get only 10 per cent.” She said the impact will be felt by the residents of the municipality who need services to be delivered.
