Three people were arrested in major crime combating operations in Bekkersdal on Friday, 1 June.
The Bekkersdal Crime Prevention Unit joined forces with cluster rural safety coordinators, Community Policing Forum (CPF) and Emergency Management Services in an operation that started at 7.30pm and ended at 2am the following day. The aim was to address undocumented persons, illegal shebeens or taverns and carry out routine stop and searches.
“The officers managed to arrest three suspects ranging in age from 24 to 38 for possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of house-breaking implements, and possession of dagga, and closed two shebeens for operating without licence,|” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

The station commander, Colonel Tinus Swart, commended the members on a job well done and also expressed his gratitude to the CPF for the good working relationship they displayed.
All arrested suspects will appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court today.
