Mohlakeng riot: Looted goods recovered, five arrested

UPDATE: A number of items were recovered by the Randfontein Police after the looting of houses and shops during last week's riots in Mohlakeng.

Clothing, toys, baby food, groceries, and liquor were among the items that were recovered by the Randfontein Police after the looting of houses and shops during last week’s riots in Mohlakeng.

Police said some of the items have already been identified by the retailers that were looted. Other items recovered included hardware, garden tools and household appliances.

“Two women and three men who were in possession of the items have been arrested. The suspects are between the ages of 19 and 43,” said the Randfontein Police spokesperson, Captain Appel Ernst.

Ernst said the suspects will face charges pertaining to possession of stolen property. She also said the suspects are expected to appear in the Randfontein Magistrates’ court on Monday, 4 June.

The Randfontein station commander, Brigadier Jacob Manamela, said these recovery operations will continue and perpetrators will be traced.

“We will be working around the clock to bring these criminal elements to book,” the Brigadier said.

Manamela also lauded the members of the police who were present to calm the three-day havoc.

“Our members did a sterling job in handling the situation. Every police officer who assisted in this operation is applauded. Your loyalty and hard work is appreciated,” the Brigadier added.
