Still smoking? Read here …

I will stop, but not at this stage of my life, I have too much stress. Truth is, you will always have stress in your life.

Another day, another morning waking up, desperately searching for your cigarettes, not to mention a lighter… Take a moment, and read about what you are doing to yourself.

It is well-known that smoking makes heart disease, stroke, cancer, emphysema, chronic bronchitis, and other killer diseases more likely to develop. You might even know that smoking is a ‘no-no’, as it’s the major cause of preventable deaths worldwide.

You can say, “I will stop, but not at this stage of my life, I have too much stress. The truth is that you will always have stress in your life, but even more so once you realise you are harming yourself, and that you might not see your children get married, or grow up.

Quitting smoking is hard to do. As many as 75 to 80 per cent of smokers say they’d like to quit, but it takes the average smoker five to 10 attempts before they successfully quit.

Here are 10 common daily side effects of smoking that often provide an incentive to quit:

• Smokers realise that foods don’t taste the way they used to. “The pleasure of eating is dramatically enhanced when smokers quit. And it happens within a few days but can continue for up to three to six months.”

• Premature aging. One of the main causes of premature ageing of the face is smoking. Smoking leads to biochemical changes in the body that speed the ageing process. Tar stains on your hands and skin are the result of holding cigarettes. And the muscle action required to inhale lead to the classic smoker’s wrinkles around the mouth.

• Then there is the smell of cigarette smoke, and it’s not one many people describe positively. In media campaigns, people in general have compared kissing a smoker to licking an ashtray.

• Second-hand smoking is a whole issue on its own. Residents that drive and smoke with their children in the car do not realise what they are doing to the children.

• Smoking dramatically increases the chances of impotence.

• Many smokers report being less able to comfortably do things as simple as climbing a set of stairs or enjoying sports activities.

• If you’re a smoker, it comes as no surprise that smoking is very expensive. Smokers sometimes switch to more affordable cigarettes, forgetting that they have a higher tar content.
