Poetry star invited to New York

A learner from Randfontein High School (RHS) has been invited to go to New York.

Khanyisile Mabusela, 15, a learner from Randfontein High School (RHS) has been invited to go to New York in July.

She received the invitation after achieving two gold certificates at the Talent Africa competition for poetry.

In May, she first took part in the Raca competition at RHS where she received three diamond certificates. Then on 2 April, Khanyisile took part in the Talent Africa competition at the Roodepoort Civic Centre. On 8 April, during the Award Ceremony at the same venue, she received the good news about the opportunity to go to New York to take part in the Talent America international competition to be held from 3 to 13 July.

“I couldn’t believe it, I thought they called the wrong person. I was ecstatic and it was unbelievable,” said Khanyisile.

Participants could choose what they wished to perform, and she chose the two poems called I am an African child and A praise to our mothers.

She started entering poetry competitions in 2016, and after receiving one diamond certificate at Raca, she knew she could do it.

It takes her about a week to practise a poem to perfection. Her mom, Phumzile, said she has always been busy, writing pieces for public speaking as a child. Khanyisile would love to do drama and acting in future.

Golda Daniels, who used to be an educator at RHS, taught and helped her.

The cost for her to be able to go to the USA is about R60 000, which included a sight-seeing tour in New York. If the community or businesses can help Khanyisile reach her dream, please call Phumzile on 074 5598308.

Her motto in life is not to listen what other people say about your dreams or passion, but to do what makes you happy.
