Drunk drivers get jail time

A motorist and taxi driver has been sentenced in Randfontein after being caught drinking and driving. Details here...

Two motorists who were caught being intoxicated while driving a motor vehicle were sentenced recently.

Sergeant Freddy Mokone successfully finalised the two cases of driving under the influence.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, “In a January 2016 case, Mokone’s investigation was able to prove that a 32-year-old driver was intoxicated while driving a motor vehicle. The driver was found guilty and was sentenced to R6 000 or 18 months’ imprisonment.

“In the second case, reported in April 2018, a 38-year-old taxi driver was also found guilty for driving under the influence of liquor. He was sentenced to R3 000 or six months’ imprisonment. The accused’s driver’s license was also endorsed for two years.”

Randfontein Police Management congratulated the member for the efforts he made in the investigation, since crimes of this nature are based on technicalities.

Lieutenant Colonel Steven Ramathlape, the acting commander of the Randfontein Detectives expressed his appreciation towards Mokone for concluding these cases successfully.

“Our colleagues at the NPA Randfontein, especially the Magistrate and Prosecutor in B court, are applauded for their stance in these cases,” Ramathlape said.
