A sewerage pipe problem since 2012!

A manager at a business says his employees has even fallen ill because of a sewerage problem.

Johan van der Walt, Manager of Rand West Motors has been waiting for a sewerage pipe to be replaced at his business premises since 2012.

In 2012, he was told to move his wash bay so that the pipe could be replaced. Van der Walt did as asked and spent a quarter of a million rand on moving the wash bay and building a new one.

“After I did this and had spent all that money, nothing was done to replace the pipe. In August 2017, the sewage became a huge problem and up to today, the problem persists. At one stage it was so bad that we had a dam full of sewage, with vehicles in the wash bay standing in the sewage.”

Johan van der Walt has had it with this problem and the health hazard they are all exposed to while at work.

The person at the head of this project, allegedly keeps on avoiding Van der Walt. He has also instructed Van der Walt to remove the precast wall, which was almost three metres high. Van der Walt did this, but two months later, nothing had been done.

“One person whom we would like to thank, is Alfred Rafisa. He does his best to lessen the sewage,” said Van der Walt. “Many of my employees have already fallen ill because of the sewage,” he added.

On 16 May, Van der Walt again contacted the Rand West City Local Municipality. He was told that the excavator had been repaired, but it first has to be used at the graveyard. That was the last he heard.

Esther Swart, chairperson of the Westonaria branch of Afriforum, finds this a matter to be taken up seriously.

The person in charge of the project was supposed to attend a meeting with Van der Walt, Swart and the Herald, but failed to arrive. When the Herald contacted him, we were told he was busy, and that we should phone back later.
