Local NGO assessed for serious matter

An oversight inspection at the Are Ageng NGO was conducted to assess the services rendered by the organisation to the public.

An oversight inspection at the Are Ageng NGO was conducted on Wednesday, 16 may, to assess the services rendered by the organisation to the public.

At the helm of the inspection was Justus de Goede, the Member of the Provincial Legislature and DA spokesperson for Social Development in Gauteng.

A statement released by the DA’s media department reads as follows: “Are Ageng made headlines last year after allegedly being used by the Gauteng Social Development as a ‘conduit’ for payments to other organisations funded by the Department of Social Development.”

The DA also says the Deputy Director, Nomawethu Kunene, who had a blown the whistle on this matter, had allegedly been harassed by the officials of the Department and was subsequently arrested.

“Kunene disappeared earlier this year, and while the police have opened a case of a missing person, they have also issued a warrant of arrest against her for not appearing court.

“The DA will assess whether the organisation is still operational and rendering social services to the public in light of problems with funding that Are Ageng has been experiencing with the Department of Social Development since a dispute between the department and the NGO arose.”

Read the 25 May edition of the Herald for the findings on the matter.
