Sold car still seller’s problem
A motor vehicle business owner in Kocksoord is furious at being expected to pay old outstanding fines on a vehicle he has already sold.
Des Stolz, a business owner in Kocksoord, is furious because he is still expected to pay fines issued to the former owner of a vehicle he has since sold to another person.
Stolz said he sold the vehicle on 7 July 2017. Since then, he has had endless problems as the new owner contacts him regularly because he gets pulled over by the traffic police who want to impound the vehicle because of the unpaid fines.
He said he had already paid over R1 600, made up of the previous owner’s licence fees, licence fee penalties, vehicle registration fees, transaction fees and other costs.

The previous owner was fined because the licence on the vehicle had expired and not been renewed, and on 7 February this year, an outstanding infringement was issued to the previous owner for the amount of R1 500.
Since then, Stolz has sought help from the Rand West Traffic Department, the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court and many other relevant departments. He has even been referred to a data clerk.
“Why must I pay the previous owner’s fines? I have paid what I was supposed to, plus some of his fines, but now they want to impound the vehicle because I will not pay more. It seems that everybody is passing the buck.”
Clarity on this matter has been requested from the Rand West Traffic Department.
