Five youngsters arrested on charges of public violence and protesting with 200 other youths in Bekkersdal recently.

Five suspects were arrested on charges of public violence and protesting with 200 other youths in Bekkersdal recently.

The ages of the suspects range from 18 to 26 years.

Police members responded to a complaint about approximately 200 young people marching towards the Bekkersdal Police Station on Saturday, 12 May.

“The group barricaded the road with burning tyres and rocks and started throwing stones at the police. The members were forced to use force and managed to arrest the suspects,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

Although it is now four days since the incident, Lefakane said the situation is still being monitored by public order police.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, advised businesses around Bekkersdal and Simunye to remain closed to avoid unnecessary looting.
