Heartrending tribute to deceased mine workers

Moving memorial service held earlier today for the seven mine workers killed at the Sibanye-Stillwater Driefontein operation last week.

A moving memorial service for the seven mine workers who passed away during a seismic incident at the Sibanye-Stillwater Driefontein Operations last week was held on Thursday, 10 May.

The service saw family members, government dignitaries, such as the national Minister of Mineral Resources, Gwede Mantashe, the head of the Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union (AMCU), Joseph Mathunjwa and representatives of the Sibanye-Stillwater mine among those in attendance.

Speakers conveyed their condolences to the families of the deceased who were seated in the venue. They also spoke of the importance of ensuring the safety of the mines in order to curtail the number of fatalities in the industry.

According to the mine’s press statement, the 13 miners were trapped during the seismic incident (measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale), last week.

“The incident occurred on the western side of the Driefontein operation at approximately 12.15pm on Thursday, 3 May 2018,” the company said.

The company also said a team of specially trained workers from mine rescue worked for 40 hours to rescue and recover the employees after the incident.

“The last employee was recovered at about 7.30am on Saturday, 6 May,” the company said.
