RCA outing for arts

The children learned step-by-step how a laser cutter works.

Learners of the Randfontein Christian Academy went on an art expedition with a view to Mother’s Day this morning (8 May). They spent the morning sharpening their art skills at the Loelins Arts and Crafts store in Culemborg Park.

“Every year we make gifts for Mother’s and Father’s Day. From this year, as art lessons have become compulsory so we decided to make a field trip so that the learners can see where the things they work with come from,” said Clarisse Venter, RCA’s spokesperson.

“We did not want to take them to a place without learning anything,” she added.

Debbi Pretorius, art teacher said the children learn various things in the arts programme.

“We do all the mediums and every quarter they have an outing. Today they are here to learn how the laser cutter works, because they do a lot of painting and its techniques, and the laser cutter is awesome for that.”

Debbi also said the programme is aligned with RCA’s ethos as a Christian-based school. “It is all about the white and the red; red symbolises the blood of Jesus Christ.

“It is part of the Mother’s Day gift. The laser cutting machine will show children how the process works, from the design through to when the computer sends images to the machine. They will be watching while the laser cuts key rings with their little messages for their mothers.”

Debbi said the key rings are attached to bracelets for Mother’s Day.

“We do concentrate on the religious meaning of it, because mothers represent God. He gave them to us, so that they can look after us here on Earth.

“So, the big message is love and respect. These children are special in the way they look at things. The gifts they are making for their mothers are truly magical,” Debbi concluded.
