This morning, 25 April, the ex-boyfriend (dubbed the New Years’ Eve killer), that allegedly brutally murdered Danel Rooskrans, 25, appeared in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court.
This is his third appearance since he was found fit to stand trial, after he was taken to Sterkfontein Hospital for a psychiatric assessment earlier this month.
The presiding judge was Regional State Prosecutor Etienne van Niekerk, and Nita Barnard, the State Prosecutor, appeared on behalf of the State. Advocate Amanda Nel, the ex-boyfriend’s legal representative, was once again absent, as she had other cases to attend to.

It was an emotional day for Rooskrans’ family, as it was the first time some of them heard that Rooskrans had also been raped. The charges against the accused are murder, rape and defeating the ends of justice.
Van Niekerk read the indictment to the accused. This case is now going to the South Gauteng (Johannesburg) High Court on 11 May where they will be starting the pretrial.
The accused remains imprisoned and was moved to the Johannesburg Correctional Services (Sun City) today.
Rooskrans was brutally murdered at a house on Venus Street, in Toekomsrus on New Year’s Eve. She was the mother of one toddler and a baby.
