Online School Applications: What You Need to Know

Applications for Grade 1 and Grade 8 placements in Gauteng government schools opened on 16 April 2018. On the day applications opened, 153‚770 parents successfully applied for their children to be admitted to schools next year.

Gauteng education MEC Panyaza Lesufi said that parents should start applying for schools as early as possible to avoid any problems at the beginning of the 2019 academic year.

Here’s what you need to know:

Once your application is successful‚ you will receive an SMS. Your next step is to submit all the required documents to the school you have applied to within seven days.

The documents required are:

The child’s identity document
A parent or guardian’s identity document
Proof of home or work address

In addition:

Grade 8 applications must supply a Grade 7 report
Grade 1 applications must supply an inoculation card

Your FAQ answered:

When will my child be placed?
Placement starts on the July 18 and closes on October 31.

How many schools can I apply to?
Parents may only apply for up to five schools per learner.

My child is not going into Grade 1 or 8, can I enrol them in a new school online?
No, parents applying for any other grade must do so at the school.

My child is currently enrolled Grade R – do they need to apply for the same school in Grade 1?
Admission is not automatic – learners currently enrolled for Grade R at a particular school must also apply for Grade 1 online.

What about children with special needs?
Parents with children wanting a school with special needs capacity must apply directly at the school and medical records in the application.

When do applications close?
Applications close on May 28.
