Dustbin thief caught with stolen goods

On 18 April, at about 10.30am, a 20-year-old man was arrested by the Bekkersdal Police on charges of possession of stolen property, after he was caught pushing a dustbin full of stolen goods.

“It is alleged that the officers, Sergeant Joseph Nkaki and Constable Godfrey Thobejane were patrolling around the Bekkersdal taxi rank, when they were stopped by a woman who informed them that she had seen someone walking along, pushing her stolen trolley bin,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakana, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson.

The police swiftly responded to the complaint, and with the assistance of the community, he was apprehended Some of the allegedly stolen property was found in the bin. The suspect was arrested and will be charged with residential burglary/ house-breaking and possession of stolen property.

He is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

The station commander, Colonel Tinus Swart, commended both officers on their swift reaction and thanked the community for assisting the police in bringing the perpetrator to book without assaulting him.

“Taking the law into your own hands is an offence that is punishable by law,” he added.
