Two brothers attacked, one shot dead

One of two brothers was shot and killed while walking in Simunye last night (Wednesday, 18 April).

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, the Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, said the incident took place on Tlhagisa Street at about 8.55pm.

“It is alleged that two brothers were walking when they were accosted by the suspects, one armed with a firearm.

The one with a firearm allegedly accused the victims of being Nyaope addicts and without any provocation, started assaulting both. He ended up shooting one of the victims in the head.

“The victim fell to the ground while his brother managed to escape. He later went back to investigate and found his brother lying in a pool of blood. The police were summoned to the scene, but the victim had already succumbed to his injuries, and was pronounced dead on the scene. The matter was handed over to the detective on standby, Sergeant Shiviti, who collected and followed up on information around the scene.

“He managed to arrest the perpetrators and recovered the firearm. The suspects will be charged with murder and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.”

The suspects are expected to appear before the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

Colonel Tinus Swart, the Bekkersdal Police station commander, applauded the member for the dedication he displayed towards his duties

“This is the kind of service I expect from my members; one lost life is one too many. We will ensure that justice is served,” he said.

Detective Seargent Serva Shiviti of the Serious and Violence Crime in Bekkersdal made a break through when he arrested murder suspects and recovered the weapon shortly after the incident.
