Homeowner awoken by intruder

Bekkersdal resident woke up to find a burglar in his home.

A Bekkersdal homeowner was awoken by a noise on Saturday night (14 April) and found a burglar in his lounge.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the incident happened at about 10pm.

“It is alleged the victim was awoken by a strange noise coming from the lounge. He investigated and saw an unknown man holding his TV. The intruder allegedly dropped the TV when he realised the homeowner was on to him and started running.

“The victim alerted the neighbours who assisted in giving chase. The suspect was caught by the community and the police were summoned.

A case of burglary was registered. The suspect, aged 26, will be charged with residential burglary.”

He is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.

Colonel LM Swart, Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the community for the arrest and thanked them for not taking matters into their own hands.
