Business does it differently for Easter

West Pack Express Fochville on the far West Rand decided to do something different during the Easter weekend.

West Pack Express Fochville on the far West Rand decided to do something different during the Easter weekend, and offered its customers “egg-stra special” treats for the kids.

Staff wore fun bunny ears and handed out marshmallow eggs to the children while their parents shopped in-store.

Marcelino Gomes, the store manager said, “We are always looking for ways to surprise and delight our customers, and seeing the joy on the children’s faces because of a small gesture such as an Easter egg made it such a memorable experience.”

Liso Nombe (the oldest), her two brothers Sisonke and Akumzi and sister Imidongo (the youngest) all received marshmallow Easter eggs at West Pack Express Fochville during the Easter weekend. Photo submitted.

One of these customers was Baby Leanke Barnard, with her cute painted bunny face. She had lots to celebrate that day, as her parents had surprised her with a new puppy, Rolie.

Chantelle, her mom said, “We visited the store to choose some toys for our new fur-child, and were treated with more chocolate eggs. It was the perfect way to end our Easter weekend.”

The entire Nombe family were also treated to Easter eggs at the store. “Liso (my oldest), Sisonke, Akumzi and Imidongo (my youngest) just wanted to go back and had lots of fun. It was very unexpected,” said their mother.

This is not the first time that West Pack Express Fochville has done something unique for a special occasion. On International Childhood Cancer Day (15 February) they helped raise awareness for the Childhood Cancer Foundation of SA (CHOC). Childhood cancer is an often curable disease that may not be treated due to late diagnosis, or lack of access to life-saving essential medicines and appropriate treatment. In South Africa, it’s estimated more than half of the children with cancer go undiagnosed, and many of those who are diagnosed are in advanced stages of illness. The South African Children’s Tumour Registry reports about 1 000 new cases a year in children under the age of 16.

West Pack Express Fochville asked their customers to take photos wearing blue (CHOC’s corporate colour) or to make a heart pose to show they had a heart for children with cancer.

“We rewarded some of our customers with vouchers to thank them for participating, and the West Pack retail group donated R2 000 in vouchers to CHOC on behalf of their fans, who also helped create awareness of this important cause,” said Gomes.

“Our customers in the Fochville community are passionate about causes such as cancer,” said Gomes, who went on to explain how the West Pack retail group ran a community-initiated competition in December and January, giving away R1 million in cash prizes and donations to customers and their favourite charities.

“A total of R175 000 was donated to cancer-related charities, R20 000 of which was donated to Cansa by one of our Fochville customers, Marieta Dirker, who was also given a R20 000 cash prize for her nomination,” said Gomes.
