A secret haven revealed in R’fontein

The youngest resident is 57, while the oldest is 91.

On 28 March, a resident showed the Herald a secret place on Van der Stel Street.

On arrival, the resident introduced the Herald to Marelize Bothma and Elmarie Richter, from the House of Golden Oldies.

This is a home that Marelize lived in previously, but in June 2017, she opened it up to the public, to give less fortunate elderly people a safe haven. At this stage there are 13 residents, with two more coming soon.

The home was approved as a Non-profit Organisation (NPO) on 27 February, but only received the official documentation last week.

Elmarie Richter, the nurse who has also been there a year, looks after everybody’s health and the residents in frail care.

The youngest resident is 57, while the oldest is 91. This NPO is mostly there for elderly people who only receive State pensions via Sassa, or do not have a home to live in. Golden Oldies is not at all like other old age homes, as it has a garden, and its rooms are homely.

The home is starting a day-care facility, for elderly people whose children do not want them to stay at home alone, because of the crime rate. These people are picked up by their families after work.

Residents get well-balanced meals, and the atmosphere is peaceful. The owners would like to expand their facility, but can only do so if they can find a sponsor or two.

Because this is a NPO, the community is welcome to donate anything they can think of that will help the home.
