Nothing sacred about Greenhills cemetery

When residents go to the cemetery to dump their waste, the workers at the cemetery try to stop them, but then they start fighting with the workers.

After the Herald’s recent positive story on the Greenhills Cemetery, it was a disappointment to hear residents complaining about the cemetery again.

Peter Dick, DA councillor for Ward 9, had a lot to say on 22 March about the rubbish/ personal waste that is being dumped at the cemetery.

“This is a sacred place, but there is no respect!” he said.

The community got together recently and cleaned up the area, but, “This is a matter that should be dealt with by the Rand West Local City Municipality,” said Dick.

When residents go there to dump their waste, the workers at the cemetery try to stop them, but they fight with the workers.

It wasn’t long before the Herald understood the difficulties the three permanent and six Community Work Programme employees have – for one thing, the lawn mowers have to service Westonaria and Libanon as well.

Work was started, but never completed.

Secondly, they don’t have bush cutters. The tools they need are definitely a problem. On top of that, no permanent contractor has been appointed by the municipality. According to one worker, they only get one contractor once a year to come and clean, and that occurs in February.

At the back of the new part of the cemetery, the wall near the road has been damaged by a motorist who drove into the wall some time ago, and no repairs have been effected.

“I think shortness of manpower is also a big problem,” Dick added.
