Want to become a soldier? What you need to know …

Attention students! What you need to know should you want a career in the military.

The South African National Defence Force (SANDF) exhibited during the West Rand Career Exhibition, and Captain Katlego Mokgoko said there is a set of attributes that one needs to have in order to become an efficient soldier.

He said those who are patriots and passionate about serving their country will succeed in the field. “When you speak of personal attributes that one needs to have to get into this career, you first need to have a passion to serve your country, because not everyone can be recruited,” Mogoko said.

He said people should not only want to get into the army because of money.

“This is a job that takes someone who is dedicated, and it is very important for candidates to possess all these qualities, because as a soldier the lives of many people in your country are literally in your hands.

“A person has to be geared for this kind of job and always be ready to lay down one’s life.”

He said there are often misconceptions about being a soldier. “People think that when you are a soldier, you will only be deployed to war; however, when you find yourself in situation where your life is threatened, you need to be mentally prepared for anything. He said for example, if there is a situation where you are at war and you lack any of the attributes, you will essentially be putting the lives of many people in danger, “Because you need to play your role and protect those you serve.”

He added that the military does not focus only revolt.

“There are quite a number of careers within SANDF that one can pursue. There are medical doctors, engineers, pilots, mechanics, technicians, psychologists, social workers and priests.”

He said discipline is one of the most important attributes that every soldier needs to possess. “It takes discipline to follow a direct order, and questioning an order shows defiance,” Mokgoko said.
