Security beefed up at the 2018 Show

Law-enforcement agencies unite to ensure the community's safety at the Randfontein Show.

The much-anticipated start of the Randfontein Show on 1 March was marked by a parade by the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) that joined forces with the South African Police Service (SAPS) and Rand West City Traffic Department (RWCTD) to demonstrate to community members that their safety will be priority during the four-day event.

“We want to showcase to the public that the SANDF, SAPS and RWCTD are joining forces. We are here to support the community,” said Major General Elwin Langenhoven.

Captain Appel Ernst of the Randfontein Police said the police want to assure people about their safety.

“We stand as a joint force even outside the Show grounds, where we will be looking after people and their vehicles.”

She said various police units will be combating vehicle theft. “We will be all over the show, because sometimes people are not vigilant enough as far as their vehicles are concerned.”

Ernst said it is important for people to look after their valuables and not fall victim to thieves. “That is why we are here in full force,” she added.

Langenhoven said there is a military static display at the Show where those interested will be able to get information about enlisting for military service next year.

The West Rand Police Cluster commander, Major General PF Kekana acknowledged the salute in his address and urged the community to assist law-enforcement agencies in the fight against crime.

The parade was the first of its kind in the 32 years of the Show, much to the delight of the community.
