Girl Guides makes R’fontein proud

The reason they had this successful march, was to go honour Warner Goodyear.

On Sunday, 25 February, Girl Guides from Randfontein Primary School, together with Girl Guides from all over the West Rand, marched from the school to Greenhills Graveyard.

The Herald spoke to Alice Mnisi, a Grade 2 teacher, who leads and teaches the Girl Guides with Julia Nape, at Randfontein Primary. Rebecca Manganya teaches the smaller girls, who are known as Brownies.

They had the march to honour Warner Goodyear, a Sergeant Major of the Mafeking Cadet Corp and a former Boy Scout. He passed away in 1912, in the Siege of Mafeking. The town was renamed as Mafikeng in 1980, when it was incorporated into the then Bophuthatswana.

The Girl Guides took time out to beautify Goodyear’s grave, and performed their usual Girl Guide routine. The parents of the girls were invited to join the ceremony, and they also enjoyed doing the march.

Warner Goodyear’s grave was beautified by the Girl Guides.

Randfontein policeman, Sergeant Molepo, led the group, and the Sector 4 and Sector 5.6 Community Policing Forum (CPF) patrollers were a great help in keeping the Girl Guides and Brownies safe. Johan from Sector 5(c) and Kevin from Sector 5(d) also helped.

“The CPF patrollers were amazing,” Alice said. Janet Aereboe, the Regional Commissioner for Girl Guides South Africa, said it was a marvelous event, and everything ran smoothly.
