Police rescue suspect from vicious mob

"Assaulting a suspect in the name of justice is totally unjustifiable. Those who take matters into their own hands will be prosecuted".

On 25 February, the Bekkersdal police rescued a 30-year-old suspect from an angry mob after he had allegedly stabbed and killed a 27-year-old victim at about 6.45pm the previous evening.

They acted swiftly as an angry mob from Silvercity was after him.

” It is alleged that the Bekkersdal police received a complaint of murder at Silvercity. The members proceeded there and upon arrival discovered that the victim had sustained multiple stab wounds and had already been pronounced dead,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police.

A case of murder was duly opened. Then, in the early hours of Sunday, 25 February, the police received information that the suspect had been caught by the community of Silvercity.

They proceeded to the scene, where the injured suspect was handed over to the police. He was placed under arrest but later transported to a hospital and placed under police guard. He will be charged with murder.

The station commander, Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, condemned the community for taking matters into their own hands and urged them to refrain from that practice. “Assaulting a suspect in the name of justice is totally unjustifiable. Those who take matters into their own hands will be prosecuted,” he concluded.
