Kwaito star brings hope to drug addicts

Kabelo Mabalane brought a message of hope to drug abusers in Mohlakeng recently.

“There is hope for drug addicts,” said kwaito musician Kabelo Mabalane, who is better known as Kabelo or Bouga Luv. He addressed an audience of youngsters and teens at the Kasie Metro Movie outlet in Mohlakeng recently.

Kabelo is one of the kwaito-genre exponents in the mould of the late Mandoza. He is also a presenter on SABC 2’s anti-drug programme Kick It and an ultra-distance athlete, having run the Comrades Marathon several times.

He has opened for many top international acts including 50 Cent and performed at the Go West! Festival in Mogale City in 2016.

“I was also a hardcore drug user once. I just told myself to kick the bad and dangerous habit and have not looked back since. I have been clean for 15 years,” the kwaito star said.

Andries Dandi, who organised the event, is a Soul City Master Trainer on the West Rand. This seasoned actor and singer said, “It was a positive move for us to have Kabelo here. We would want the Kasie Metro Movie outlet to be used for many similar events in future. We have a proposal in mind to submit to government for funding to help build a stage for a theatre. We also thank owner Paseka Mosiane for this initiative and mini cinema in our township. As artists, we would like to help him transform this space to host movies and theatrical plays.”

He added that this can help enhance the culture of theatre in the townships, considering that many of the youngsters have never been to a theatre.

“I would also like to thank other stakeholders like our MMC, councillor Annah Gela, the X Change Organisation and the cast of Black Child who staged a six-man anti-drug-abuse play, Neo Mathetsa of Back Yard Library as well as the police for the success of this event.”
