Nightmare on Elizabeth Road

It's estimated that there is a pothole every 19,2 metres on Elizabeth Road in Loumarina Plots.

Patrick Stead and Carryn Schelle have had to replace four tyres and pay more than R3 000 to date after travelling on Elizabeth Road in Loumarina plots.

They have now decided that enough is enough.

The couple said Elizabeth Road is approximately 2,2 kilometres long and has an estimated 125 potholes. They said they counted them a month ago.

“That means there is a pothole approximately every 19,2 meters,” Stead said. He also said that, besides the shocking number of potholes, there is no sign warning motorists of potholes on the road.

Schelle says it has cost her about R3 200 to replace the tyres and have the wheel alignment done.

Stead said the lights on Elizabeth Road – when they work – do not shine on the road, they face the houses, making the road even more dangerous. He claimed that he has reported the problem to the ward councillor who told them he had reported Elizabeth Road and other roads in Wheatlands to the Rand West City Local City Municipality (RWCLM).

“Only the roads in Wheatlands were seen to,” he said. The councillor then referred them to an employee at the RWCLM.

“The employee did not even know about Elizabeth Road,” said Stead, “and the municipality is almost a year behind on paying out compensation claims.”

Motorists tend to avoid the road, but this adds to their fuel costs, as they take another route. Some residents have tried filling the holes in front of their homes with sand or cement.

The nightmare road.

“Lang Road in Elandsvlei is also a problem,” Schelle added.

The Herald is awaiting comment on the matter from the RWCLM.
