‘Drinking water is safe’, Rand Water assures

Rand Water assures consumers of a safe drinking water supply despite media reports of localised pollution.

Rand Water assures consumers of a safe drinking water supply, following media reports of concerns regarding localised pollution in parts of the Vaal River system. The current dam level at the Vaal Dam is 82,6 per cent.

In response to the allegations of pollution in the Vaal River System, Justice Mohale, Media Relations Manager for Rand Water said in a statement on Wednesday that, “Mindful of the fact that the integrity of all surface and ground water resources must be protected, it is important to assure consumers within our service area that Rand Water will continue to provide drinking water of high quality.”

He added, “Rand Water abstracts raw water from the Vaal Dam, located upstream of these reported pollution incidents, and purifies the water to meet current drinking water standards (SANS 241:2015).”

It’s said Rand Water supplies drinking water to Gauteng and other areas of the country.

According to their official website, their distribution network “… includes over 3 056 kilometres of large diameter pipeline, feeding 58 strategically located service reservoirs. Its customers include metropolitan municipalities, local municipalities, mines and industries and it supplies, on average, 3 653 million litres of water to these customers daily”.
