Dead man found in veld

Badly assaulted man found dead in veld – allegedly did not return a cellphone he had borrowed.

A case of murder is being investigated after the body of a man was found lying in the open veld next to the N12 in the Simunye area, Bekkersdal Police said.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said, “Police received a report about a body having been discovered and responded. Early investigation revealed that the victim had sustained multiple injuries to his body. His identity was unknown at that stage.

“It was through further intensive investigation by detective Sergeant Sevha Shiviti and detective Constable Thembinkosi Maboloba that the victim was found to be 29 years old and from Klipfontein. It was also discovered that the victim was last seen being assaulted for allegedly not returning a cellphone that he had borrowed.”

“The body was discovered by a passer-by on 3 February,” said Lefakane, “and three men have since been since been arrested in connection with the murder”.

They are aged between 28 and 36 years and have already made a brief appearance in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court.

“The suspects were identified through information provided by the community and arrested four days later on 7 February. They are expected to be back in court on 26 February for a formal bail application.”

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, the Bekkersdal Police station commander commended the members for a job well done and thanked the community for assisting with the information that led to the arrest.

“I will not allow criminals to do as they wish in my policing precinct,” he said.
