Village Mall robbery – Employee tied up, assaulted

Thursday morning, 8 February, at approximately 10.15am, three men, armed with handguns, targeted Markham in Village Square Mall.

According to Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson, the robbers held three employees and two customers at gunpoint. “They were taken to the back of the store and forced to open the safe and the cash register,” she said.

They assaulted a male employee when he allegedly refused to cooperate and tied him up with shoe laces. All the victims were then locked in the toilet at the back of the store.

“The robbers took numerous cellphones and a small amount of money. One of them stayed behind in the store for a while after the other two had left,” added Ernst. A customer later freed the employees.

Commenting on the matter, Village Square Shopping Centre confirmed the armed robbery and the theft of, “an undisclosed value of electronic devices and related stock.

“Security Services were on site and handed the matter over to the Randfontein Police for further investigation. Fortunately, no injuries were reported. Safety of all patrons and shoppers is, and always remains, the Centre’s top priority and we will continue to remain alert,” Centre Management said.
