A 42-year-old man is facing a charge of murder after he allegedly beat a 31-year-old man suspected of breaking into his house.
The incident took place in Zuurbekom at about 7.30am on Wednesday, 31 January.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, “It is alleged that members were conducting their routine sector patrol duties when they received a complaint about a murder from the Zuurbekom Clinic. They investigated and found the alleged murderer at the clinic. He interviewed him, during which he claimed that there had been a burglary at his house.
“The homeowner said he searched the area, found the alleged thief, and confronted him. A fight broke out and the homeowner used a steel pipe to assault the alleged thief, causing him to collapse. The homeowner loaded the injured alleged thief onto his bakkie and rushed him to the Zuurbekom Clinic where he was certified dead on arrival. The matter was reported to the police and the homeowner was arrested. He will be charged with murder and is expected to appear in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court soon.
The station commander, Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, condemned the violent behaviour and urged the community to refrain from taking the law into their own hands. “It is a criminal act to assault someone just because he has wronged you,” he added.
