Ritalin – the bad news

Mother said her son was like a different person

The controversial medication, Ritalin, has been the subject of debate for a long time, but many children and even adults still use it.

The Herald spoke to a mother whose child, at age 9, was on Ritalin for three months. She noted that he showed very little emotion, got very thin and had sleeping problems, and was like a different person.

According to the Foundation for a Drug-Free World, Ritalin has the same type of effects on the body as the drug known as ‘speed’.

The negative effects are: loss of appetite, insomnia and an increased heart rate. Taken in large doses, either by injection or by snorting, Ritalin puts a huge strain on your body and health.

The effect it has on your heart could cause your death. The chemical that Ritalin contains is called methylphenidate. It also contains particles of filters that are insoluble. These block the small blood vessels in your body, causing damage to your eyes and lungs.

Emotionally, the child or adult seems robot-like. In addition, Ritalin disturbs your sleeping habits. Nausea, irritability and panic attacks have also been documented.

Long-term use of Ritalin causes permanent damage to the blood vessels of the heart and brain; high blood pressure leading to heart attacks, strokes and death, and liver, kidney and lung damage. Depression is also a known side-effect.
