#NewYear’sEveMurder: From R’fontein to High Court

JUST IN: Still no official bail application from alleged #NewYear'sEve killer.

This morning, 26 January, Advocate Amanda Nel appeared in the Randfontein Magistrates’ Court on behalf of the murdered DanĂ©l Rooskrans’ alleged ex-boyfriend, who is accused of her murder.

The suspect appeared briefly, but the case was postponed for further investigation to Friday, 9 February. It was made clear that the initial bail application has been abandoned; however, the suspect can appeal for bail at any stage in the future.

According to the State Prosecutor, the case will be transferred to the Johannesburg High Court. This will be officially confirmed at the suspect’s fifth court appearance on 9 February. The family and friends of the victim are satisfied about the transfer to the High Court.

Once again, the community brought out their banners in support of the victim. Joining them were representatives from Women Against Women and Child Abuse, the Toekomsrus Youth Forum and Krugersdorp War Against Drugs.

Rooskrans’ parents, Dudley and Maureen Michael, and the suspect’s sister, also attended the court proceedings, but the suspect’s mother was not present.

There were several police officers at the court, but no disruptions took place.

The previous court appearance was supposed to be a bail application hearing, but attorney Chenique Opperman told the Magistrate the suspect had secured the services of private advocate Amanda Nel, who also handled the Ray Leslie murder trial.

Leslie was handed a 13-year sentence for the murder of his ex-wife, Candice Fritz – another domestic-related crime that shocked Toekomsrus – in 2017.

GAUtv is now also following the Rooskrans murder case.

Police confirmed that Rooskrans was beaten with a garden tool, allegedly by her ex-boyfriend on New Years Eve 2017. Rooskrans had two children, one of three years, and a baby of 10 months.

Her funeral was held in Toekomsrus on Saturday, 6 January.
