iCollege – more than just free education

iCollege explains why South African youth between the ages of 18 and 28 should come running to them.

Getting the unemployed youth off the streets and into an educational environment is one of the core functions of Randfontein CBD’s iCollege.

In a recent interview with the Herald, Futhi Skosana, Academics Manager at iCollege, explained why South Africans between the ages of 18 and 28 should come running to them.

“If we can help these guys, it will have a ripple effect as the majority of crime is committed by youngsters of this age. Many of the unemployed youth out there feel they are not worthy and have no hope, but we want to give them hope. We want to offer the less-privileged quality free education and help them pursue their dreams.”

She said they have scholarships for 40 000 students nationwide, with 3 500 already secured for the West Rand. They are still open for registrations.

The scholarships we offer are free, our students don’t have to repay the R42 000 it costs to train them. This is an unique opportunity for youngsters to empower themselves with knowledge and skills.”

She said that people often ask how they can offer free education. “The answer,” she said, “is that private businesses, many of which are listed on the JSE, pay the tuition fees. One company sponsors 1 500 students who are automatically on the company’s database and are frequently considered for jobs that become available within the company, although there is no guarantee that they will be appointed.”

She added that the registration fee is R600 and the course duration is 12 months.

“A person at varsity will study for a degree in one field for four years. A company would have to pay this person a higher salary because of the degree. By contrast, our students could be employed for less and still have a bigger spectrum of knowledge.”
