Youths jailed for targeting liquor store

Two young men sentenced for a crime they committed just three months ago.

Two youths, aged 20 and 25, have each been sentenced to eight years imprisonment of which three years was suspended for a business burglary in Bekkersdal three months ago.

They are Aphelele Mantanga and Siyabonga Chabalala.

Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson said the business burglary was committed at Robbie’s Place, a liquor store in the area at about 2.45am on Wednesday, 18 October.

It is alleged the owner received a call from one of his employees informing him of the break-in. He went to investigate and upon arrival it was discovered that the perpetrators had stolen an undisclosed amount of money, air time and cigarettes. He contacted the police and a case of business burglary was registered.

“The suspects were traced and arrested through intensive investigation led by detective Constable Tshepo Mashalawho, who managed to recover some of the stolen property as a result of the information he received. The suspects were denied bail until the passing of the sentence.”

Colonel Abraham Nkhwashu, Bekkersdal Police station commander, applauded the members for a job well done and thanked the community of Mandela section for the information that led to the arrest and ultimate conviction of the criminals.
