Rand West City Local Municipality Executive Mayor, Mzi Khumalo, has visited Izanokhanyo Primary School which was badly affected by Tuesday’s school bus and truck crash that left about 100 people injured.
The Herald established that 106 of the school’s learners were on the bus.
At least 100 people were injured after a truck and school bus collided on the N12 in Westonaria on Tuesday afternoon. The West Rand Police Cluster has advised that the Westonaria police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the collision, which occurred at about 3pm.

During his visit, Khumalo spoke to the principal, Moses Morakedle, and offered his condolences. Morakedle confirmed that the learner who was airlifted is in Lenmed Hospital, and is in a stable condition.
The Herald was also able to establish that 68 learners were taken to Leratong Hospital, while the rest went back to their parents’ care later the same evening. It is said the truck hit the school bus from the back. Principal Morakedle was on the scene shortly after a teacher informed him of the accident.
Everybody present at today’s meeting thanked God that no one had been killed in the accident.
A case of reckless and/or negligent driving was registered by the Westonaria police and an investigation is under way.
