Woman shot on Boxing Day

Investigations revealed that the firearm belonged to the suspect's brother and that it was kept inside a locked safe – Sergeant Linkie Lefakana.

A 42-year-old suspect made a brief court appearance on 27 December. He was charged with attempted murder after allegedly shooting and wounding a 32-year-old woman.

The incident happened in Johnson Street on 26 December at approximately 12.10am.

“It is alleged that the suspect stole his brother’s firearm and went to his neighbour’s place where everyone was enjoying Boxing Day,” said Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, spokesperson for the Bekkersdal Police.

It is alleged that a shot went off and hit the women in the legs. Investigations revealed that the firearm belonged to the suspect’s brother and that it was kept inside a locked safe.

The Bekkersdal Police were called and the suspect was arrested on the scene. He was charged with attempted murder and theft of a firearm.

The outcome of the court appearance was unknown at the time of going to press.
