Two illegal liquor outlets shut down

Five arrested and two illegal liqour outlet shut down in Bekkersdal in crime-prevention operation.

Five suspects were arrested and two liquor outlets were shut down following a festive-season operation by the Bekkersdal Police in late December.

All the suspects appeared in the Westonaria Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 2 January.

According to Sergeant Linkie Lefakane, Bekkersdal Police spokesperson, members of the Bekkersdal Police led by station commander Colonel Mbangwa Nkhwashu and Vispol support head painted the streets blue with what she calls a “disruptive crime-prevention operation”.

“The aim of the operation, which started at 2pm and ended at 10.30pm, was to seize liquor from unlicensed outlets and close down those outlets, and seize dangerous weapon as they were the main crime generators around the Bekkersdal policing precinct.”

She added that police visited taverns and conducted stop-and-search operations which resulted in the five arrests and closing of two liquor outlets.

Colonel Nkhwashu expressed his gratitude to the members and commended them.

“It is not about the number of arrests we made. The aim was to be proactive rather than responsive.”
