Mayor celebrates his birthday under a bridge

The less fortunate living under the Homelake Bridge received a visit from the RWCLM Mayor on the last day of 2017. It was the first time they had a visit from and interaction with a high-ranking government official.

Mzi Khumalo, the Executive Mayor of the Rand West City Local Municipality (RWCLM) chose to celebrate his birthday with the less fortunate under the Homelake Bridge on New Year’s Eve, although Khumalo’s birthday is actually 1 January.

“It was humbling to share my birthday with the destitute, the poorest of the poor and homeless as this is the season to give,” the Mayor said.

RWCLM Council Speaker, Violet Nqina Mzondeki, RWCLM spokesperson Tshidiso Tlharipe and a Miss Elite 2018 finalist joined in the special celebration.

The bridge dwellers were happy to see the Mayor because it was the first time they had a visit from and interaction with a high-ranking government official.

“This occasion presented me with an opportunity to listen to and understand the plight of the people. My attention was drawn to the fact that a granny was living there with a special-needs child. The people asked me to intervene immediately to protect the girl and the mother,” added the Mayor.
