JUST IN: Woman beaten to death on New Year’s Eve

Woman in her 20s beaten to death in Toekomsrus home on New Year's Eve.

A 26-year-old woman was brutally murdered in Venus Street, Toekomsrus on New Year’s Eve. She was allegedly beaten with a garden tool by her boyfriend.

“The boyfriend allegedly started assaulting the victim. She was badly beaten before the concerned community intervened,” said Captain Appel Ernst, Randfontein Police spokesperson.

The injured victim was transported to a local clinic but she was declared dead on arrival.

Residents in the area apprehended the suspect and he was allegedly beaten by some of the angry community members.

Randfontein Police members who responded to the complaint of murder took him away from the angry crowd. He is in hospital under police guard.

The circumstances of the murder are being investigated by Warrant Officer Rupert van Zyl. Witnesses are requested to contact him on 011 278 8100.

This senseless murder is domestic-related. The Randfontein Police Management are disgruntled that the routes available to domestic-violence victims were not used effectively,” added Ernst.

Domestic violence is not easily policed, since it happens behind closed doors. Victims do not speak out and if they do, they do not see the process completely through. Most of the victims use the process as a deterrent or a scare tactic, withdrawing cases shortly after they are reported.

“Domestic violence is a vicious circle which in this case ended in the death of one of the partners in a relationship. We cannot tolerate this kind of brutality. Help us by reporting incidents of domestic-related violence before another person dies,” added the Randfontein Police station commander, Brigadier Mashole Jacob Manamela.
